SCHOOL CLOSED - THURSDAY 13 APRIL 2017

Good morning parents / family / whanau

Mount Maunganui College will be closed today as a result of the potential risk that come with the forecasted Cyclone Cook. We do not take this decision lightly but with weather conditions set to be severe, our concerns are centred around the ability for students, parents and staff to make it safely to and from school.

Metservice have said that on top of heavy rain, severe gales with gusts of 150 km/h or more are possible for Bay of Plenty from mid morning today. Metservice have said widespread flooding throughout the BOP is likely, powerlines may be impacted and roofs lifted. Civil Defence is stating that coastal communities are likely to be effected and are advising BOP residents to prepare and make a plan. You can keep a track of warnings and information via http://bopcivildefence.govt.nz/emergency-status/ and http://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/tauranga

The closing of the school mirrors the instructed closing of the schools and ECE’s in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Thames/Coromandel as well as volunteered closure of schools and ECE’s in Tauranga. http://www.education.govt.nz/news/cyclone-cook-closes-94-schools-and-130-north-island-early-learning-centres/

Take care over the next 48 hours.

Russell Gordon - Principal

Welcome to Mount Maunganui College

At Mount Maunganui College we have a clear view of what we want to achieve.

Our vision for Mount Maunganui College is to be a Student Centred Learning Organisation where our community recognises that this is a college where:

  • commitment to our students is paramount
  • every student has the right and the responsibility to achieve to their potential
  • every student knows that they matter to their teachers
  • diversity is appreciated and celebrated.

At Mount Maunganui College we believe the fundamental purpose of education is to increase young people’s resourcefulness to enable them to cope with life and reach their potential. Our motivation as educators is to develop our students’ character to allow them to become more resilient, resourceful, reflective and reciprocal, preparing them for a lifetime of change.

Our guiding proverb:

Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe, me he maunga teitei.
Pursue excellence – should you stumble, let it be to a lofty mountain.

All our academic, sporting and cultural pursuits are underpinned by and through our school mission statement Whāia te pono – Success with integrity. At Mount Maunganui College we believe how we learn is just as important as what we learn.

We are proud of our students, and the service we offer our community.

We invite you to share in our vision and become part of us.
