Pastoral Care and Guidance
Mount Maunganui College cares about its students and has in place systems and processes that:
• give professional advice on subjects and qualifications;
• provide up-to-date information and assistance with employment and tertiary education choices;
• give personal guidance support;
• build a safe and caring school environment.
Parents and students are encouraged to make use of these services.
We do this through:
• a well resourced Transition and Careers Department;
• a committed, professional Guidance Counsellors;
• a kaitiaki;
• a qualified RTLB (Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour) supported by teacher aides;
• a dedicated form teacher for each form class and a dean for each year level;
• a school wide restorative justice programme;
• a structured and thorough attendance system;
• student-based peer mentoring between Year 9 and 13 students;
• provision of a free lunchtime health services clinic (twice a week).
Communicating with Parents
Honest and open two-way communication between parents and school is vitally important. We pride ourselves on being large enough to give a full range of opportunities but small enough to see each student as an individual.
We make regular contact via:
• a Principal’s newsletter the first Wednesday of every month;
• one progress and two formal reports per year;
• two parent / teacher interview evenings following each report issue;
• form teacher and deans who are encouraged to contact home when issues arise;
• a free logbook for detailing homework set and test results;
• an open evening and interview with enrolment;
• an orientation evening for all new Year 9 students early in Term 1.
Parents are encouraged to contact us when they recognise a learning need or have a concern about their child’s education. Education is about building skills and enthusiasm. Parents’ support and interest is a vital part of this process.
