MMC Eagles Take Out Bay Champs

The annual Elite Basketball Bays BOP Sencondary School Championships were held on Friday 18 August.

Our Mount Maunganui College Eagles matched up against three of the Bays best basketball teams, Tauranga Boys College, John Paul College and Rotorua Boys College.

The first game was against Tauranga Boys College Senior A Boys.  The strong TBC team has always been a tough challenge for the MMC boys and this game was no different.  Our boys were behind with a score of 28-19 to TBC at half time but managed to level it up again in the third quarter, helped by Shalom Broughton sinking a buzzer beater 3/4 court shot, taking the score to 35-34 to MMC.  Both teams continued to fight hard for the win with MMC coming out on top at full time with a score of 49-48.  This was by far, my game of the season so far!  Both teams were fantastic to watch.  What a game!

MMC then went on to play John Paul College from Rotorua and led the whole game with a final score of 57-46.  After that game came the final game of the round robin against Rotorua Boys College.  Rotorua Boys College came up against our MMC Eagles in the final at the Trident Invitational Tournament earlier in the year, taking out the win, so this was a game that we not only wanted to win, but had to win in order to come out on top of this tournament. Even though were a point down after the first quarter and drawn at half time, the Eagles took great direction from coaches Joseph Broughton and Jerome Smith coming back with a lead of 10 points at 3/4 time and taking the win 47-40.

Team Co-Captain, Jazz Samuel, was also named Player of the Tournament.  Well done Jazz!

Elation was felt by everyone involved and as we go in to our finals at the local league, and then on to Regionals, we take with us the knowledge that this is the first time Mount Maunganui College has ever taken this title and if we can succeed here, we can only be excited about what is to come.

A huge thank you also to our support crew who are with us all the way. You are very appreciated!
