Tēnā koutou katoa Reflecting on what has been a challenging term, I would like to acknowledge the resilience of our students, staff and the wider school community. A recurring question is how do we best support our students when households navigate isolation requirements, Covid infection, influenza and other illnesses? Teaching staff have been juggling face-to-face lessons, online support for isolating or unwell students, and covering the classes of colleagues who may be away while trying to manage their own household challenges. Thank you for your understanding and support for our team during this time. I have had the privilege of meeting with many students one-on-one while covering classes recently. This has reminded me that some senior students struggle with time management, school workload and out-of-school activities. As caregivers, there are three simple questions you can ask that your child should be able to answer with evidence through reports and the school portal. - What is your attendance percentage? (Anything less than 90% is concerning, illness aside)
- How many credits have you Not Achieved or Not Submitted? (At this point of the year, any more than eight credits might indicate an issue)
- How many credits have you achieved? (Anything less than 25 might indicate an issue)
Each child’s programme is unique, and the above should act as a guide only. The best way we can support our students is in partnership with families. If you are unsure or become aware of any ‘red flags’, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s dean. There have been a few significant school-wide events recently that are highlighted further through this newsletter. Our Matariki Awards was a wonderful evening celebrating student success, and we thoroughly enjoyed the company of all those attending. A complete list of award winners is listed below. That same morning saw our annual Polar Plunge held at Omanu Surf Lifesaving Club. The Polar Plunge is a fundraising event for Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, a cause close to many in our community. Thanks to everyone who turned out for that event. Talent Quest 2022 once again highlighted the depth of talent and hard work our Arts students put into their craft. Congratulations to Morgan Kitchings, who emerged as the ‘Best of the Best’ on the night with a stunning cover of the Four Seasons ‘Beggin’. Check out the night's photos below. Many of our musicians again came to the fore last weekend at the Rock Quest Regionals with all groups progressing through to the national video round. More details and other music achievements have been outlined by our Head of Music, Tia Beaufort, later in this newsletter. Director of Sports Dan Meade has provided an update below and there is further student success highlighted in Chemistry and Dance. Congratulations to all Mount Maunganui College students making the most of the opportunities on offer and doing their part to strengthen the positive culture of the school. All the best as you and your families continue to navigate the winter months. I am looking forward to seeing our students continue to thrive next term. Ngā mihi nui, Alastair Sinton Principal |

____________________________________________________________________________ OUTKAST QUALIFY FOR WORLD CHAMPS OutKast is a nine member hip hop crew, six of which are Mount Maunganui College students. The crew trains under Cameron Smith at his new dance studio over in Tauranga, Space Studios. The Hip Hop International World Championships are being held in Phoenix, Arizona in the USA in early August. The crew are on a whirlwind couple of months since qualifying to prepare themselves for the world stage and fundraise to help with the cost of getting there. The crew ranges in age from 14 to 17 and are currently training 8 hours a week to polish their performance. Due to covid restrictions, there was no live competition for Hip Hop International this year but rather, crews from all around the country submitted video entries at the end of May which were judged by a panel of international judges. OutKast qualified in a very tough competition and are ecstatic about venturing to the United States to represent their country. This is a dream come true for these members to compete at Worlds, some have been working towards this since they were 8 or 9 years old. OutKast are so grateful to all those who’ve helped them on their individual dance journeys so far and for all the support they’ve received. Let’s go OutKast! |

Dan Meade Director of Sport Off-field Sports Uniforms A reminder that off-field sports uniforms are available online for purchase by clicking on this link https://pureathletic.co.nz under the ‘Schools and Clubs’ tab. The goal is to have all students playing sports at Mount Maunganui College arriving and leaving in approved sports uniforms. A great place to start is the hoodie with a long or short sleeve tee (speak to your coach to clarify which one they prefer you to have). Please note, all first team players will be provided with ‘off-field’ kit for the season. REMINDER - These clothing items are not part of the school uniform and cannot be worn during school hours. High Achievers Congratulations to Teghan Ngatai and Salem Broughton who have been named as reserves for the New Zealand Under 18 Basketball teams. The Under 18 Boys team is set to travel to Iran in late August for the Asia Championships and the Under 18 Girls set to travel to India in early September. Kaia Berridge returned from the FIBA U17 Asia Championships with a bronze medal, qualifying his team for the World Championships in Spain. Kaia is currently in Spain and we wish him and his team the best of luck. What’s been happening? BOP Indoor Bowls Championships A great day for the Mount Maunganui College Indoor bowls team! Beth Simpson (captain), Sarah Burke, Michael Burke, Hunter Reid, Sarah Adlam and Finn Simpson competed in the Bay of Plenty Indoor Bowls Championships, keen to defend their title.
Five out of six bowlers qualified for the top 18. Beth won 2 games, with the rest having a bye, then a win, taking all 5 through to the top 8. Unfortunately 2 of the 4 quarter finals were our students taking on others from Mount Maunganui College (Beth v Hunter and Sarah Burke v her brother Michael!). Wins for Beth, Finn and Michael saw three through to the top four. Siblings Finn and Beth faced each other in one semifinal with Beth just taking the win! Michael won his semi meaning he met Beth in the grand final, with Beth coming out on top. Finn played well to win the 3rd/4th playoff making it 1, 2 and 3 for Mount Maunganui College. Beth Simpson, 1st Michael Burke, 2nd Finn Simpson, 3rd
Sarah Adlam was runner-up in the Consolation Plate.
Taking the top 3 spots, along with solid performances from the rest of the team, saw MMC convincingly win the school competition with 34 points,
Polar Plunge This year's Polar Plunge was another great success with plenty of students, staff and community members making the mad dash into the surf in memory of ex-students Harrison Mundy and Jed Roberts. Along with the support of local coffee cart, Coffee and Cones, we managed to raise $1200 for the Leukaemia Foundation and raise awareness of Leukaemia and other blood cancers.

GOLF ROAD UPDATE Council is investing in Tauranga’s roading assets to improve road safety and performance. As part of this programme we’ll be constructing a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Golf Road. This pedestrian crossing is part of our work to create a safe corridor for kids to walk or cycle to and from school in your area. We’ve already installed wider shared paths on Links Avenue and Maunganui Road, now we want to ensure kids can cross Golf Road safely to get to where they're going. Construction of the pedestrian crossing, new kerbs and drainage on Golf Road is scheduled to start next week. To allow construction while keeping crew and road users safe, there will be a temporary lane closure. This work is timed to overlap with school holidays to reduce impacts on traffic. |
 |
What this means for you As this work takes place over the school holidays, this should not affect school drop offs and pick ups. If you live in the area, please take note and also know that there is support for temporary pedestrian crossings around the work. Should the work take longer as expected due to weather or unforeseen issues, we will keep your schools posted and will communicate how remaining impacts school traffic. We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate your patience while we work hard to get the job done. Should you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us: Stefan Van Den Broek – Site engineer, Fulton Hogan Email: stefan.vandenbroek@fultonhogan.com Desiree Donwen – Community contact, Fulton Hogan Email: desiree.donwen@fultonhogan.com Phone: 027 261 6713 ____________________________________________________________________________ |
