Tēnā koutou katoa

Welcome to term three.

School leadership and our Health and Safety committee have met and reviewed our mask-wearing policy, and we are strongly recommending that staff and students wear masks indoors. Thanks to all families who have supported mask-wearing at recent school events. We will continue to monitor our response to Covid-19 and regularly review our measures.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, students need your support to achieve their best. Many school events are designed to give families timely information to best support their child’s educational journey. Please contact your child’s dean immediately if you have any questions regarding their progress.

Thanks to those who made time to meet with teachers last night and today. If you require further support moving forward, subject-specific concerns are best followed up with your child’s teacher via email. Staff emails are available on the most recent school report.

Thanks also to families who came along to our Structuring a Senior Course session on Tuesday. This event is supported next week through our Careers evening on Thursday, 4th August, with a chance for you and your child to meet people working in industry, training and tertiary institutions and our Heads of Department.

It has been a busy few weeks of sport over the break, with many students making representative appearances in their respective codes. Catch the full update from our Director of Sports, Dan Meade, here.

Thanks to all our students, families and staff who support our Sports, Arts and Culture programmes, being involved in groups, teams and competitions outside the classroom strongly supports student engagement and achievement. Best of luck to our DanceNZMade competitors this weekend. The regional competition starts Sunday and finishes on Monday night at Baycourt.

Congratulations to Skye Hine for the recent release of her first single since her incredible run in Popstars last year. Check out ‘Behind the Gun’ here

I’m sure Skye’s music will be a feature on our recently established radio station. MaunganuiFM has been streaming for a couple of months, but over the break a transmitter has been installed and you can now pick it up at home or in the car on 107.1 fm. Thanks to Mount Maunganui College Head of Music, Tia Beaufort, for this great initiative.

On the topic of radio, some of you may have caught this short piece about past student Sam Taylor who is currently studying at Harvard University and is on a mission to find a Te Reo Māori teacher in Boston. If you think you might know someone who can help, please contact me so I can pass the information on to Sam.

Finally, with support from our Parent Support Group and the Board of Members, we are installing new cycle storage options around the school. This ongoing project will make it easier for staff and students to cycle to school. While selected areas have good visibility and are covered by security cameras, we ask that all cyclists bring an appropriate lock to ensure security. We have secure storage for skateboards and scooters in B6 for students who use these to travel to school. The recent disruption to local roading will no doubt yield an improvement in safety for pedestrians and cyclists. As a result, it will be great to see more students getting into the habit of walking, peddling and pushing to school.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

Off-field Sports Uniforms
A reminder that off-field sports uniforms are available online for purchase by clicking on this link  https://pureathletic.co.nz under the ‘Schools and Clubs’ tab. The goal is to have all students playing sports at Mount Maunganui College arriving and leaving in approved sports uniforms. A great place to start is the hoodie with a long or short sleeve tee (speak to your coach to clarify which one they prefer you to have).

Please note, all first team players will be provided with ‘off-field’ kit for the season.

REMINDER - These clothing items are not part of the school uniform and cannot be worn during school hours.

High Achievers

Olive Waterston debuted for the Bay of Plenty Volcanix Womens Rugby Team last weekend. An amazing achievement for a secondary school student, made even sweeter by the fact they bagged a win in their first game.

Year 9, Sophie Loader, braved the mud at the North Island Secondary Schools Cyclocross Championships and gained a bronze medal in the Under 14 Division.

Kaia Berridge returned for the U17 Basketball World Cup with the highlight being their 80 - 59 win over Mali. He now heads off to High School in the States and we wish him the best of luck.

What’s been happening?

Representative programmes
We are so proud of our students making regional representative sporting teams over the break. We had 27 rugby players represent Western Bay of Plenty, 20 netball players represent Tauranga, five hockey players represent Tauranga at an U18 level (U16s yet to be named) and 13 students represent Tauranga in Basketball. This is a great reflection on the effort of our students as well as their coaches, managers, caregivers and supporters.

COVID-19 INFORMATION

Covid-19 is still active in our community and health measures common in all framework settings should be followed. Basic hygiene measures such as washing and sanitising hands as well as cough and sneeze etiquette remain crucial to limiting the spread of Covid-19. As always, if your child is unwell please keep them at home and notify the school.

We are continuing to monitor positive cases in the school community so please click here if your child tests positive.

Isolation requirements are still in effect for positive cases and their households.

GOLF ROAD UPDATE

Council is investing in Tauranga’s roading assets to improve road safety and performance.  As part of this programme we’ll be constructing a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Golf Road.

This pedestrian crossing is part of our work to create a safe corridor for kids to walk or cycle to and from school in your area. We’ve already installed wider shared paths on Links Avenue and Maunganui Road, now we want to ensure kids can cross Golf Road safely to get to where they're going.

Construction of the pedestrian crossing, new kerbs and drainage on Golf Road is scheduled to start next week. To allow construction while keeping crew and road users safe, there will be a temporary lane closure. This work is timed to overlap with school holidays to reduce impacts on traffic.

What this means for you

As this work takes place over the school holidays, this should not affect school drop offs and pick ups. If you live in the area, please take note and also know that there is support for temporary pedestrian crossings around the work.

Should the work take longer as expected due to weather or unforeseen issues, we will keep your schools posted and will communicate how remaining impacts school traffic.

We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate your patience while we work hard to get the job done. Should you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us:
