Tēnā koutou katoa

I would like to begin this email by congratulating and thanking our Board members for putting their hands up to support Mount Maunganui College in this important governance role. We welcome the return of Andrea Webster, Debbie Green, Maia Ririnui and Racheal Cade from the previous board and new members Jamie de la Haye (parent representative), Hayden Burns (staff representative) and Sarah Adlam (student representative). I look forward to continuing our great work and constructive relationship.

I acknowledge outgoing members David Weaver, Graeme Skudder and Abby Lindsey. David and Graeme have been dedicated members of the Board, serving nine years each. Their calm and considered approach to school governance and fierce passion for Mount Maunganui College have seen the school go from strength to strength. Abbey has played an essential role as a student representative, advocating for students and providing a critical perspective for the Board.

Many of you may be aware that NZQA and the Ministry of Education have announced some changes to NCEA in response to the Covid-19 pandemic for 2022. Details on how this might impact your child have already been shared, and more information is available here.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s dean or teachers in the first instance.

Last week, some of our sports teams headed north to Lynfield College in Auckland for our annual exchange. This exchange has run continuously since 1959 when both schools opened, and is a highly anticipated feature of our sports calendar and an essential warm-up for winter tournament. Mount Maunganui College retained the shield after comprehensive wins in hockey (boys and girls), basketball, rugby, football (boys and girls) and Premier 2 netball. Our Premier 1 girls drew, and our debating team had a narrow yet hard-fought loss. Congratulations to our teams, and a huge thank you to our coaches and managers who made themselves available to support the college on the day.

We had another wonderful open evening last week, welcoming prospective new students and their families into our school. We are always keen to improve on our events, so if you were there and have any feedback, please feel free to email Erin Porteous at erinp@mmc.school.nz. Enrolments are available via our school website, and we must get good indication numbers to support planning for 2022.

Our annual student engagement survey is now open, and I ask that you encourage your child to complete this survey through Mount Maunganui College moodle. The survey can be done at school or home, forms part of our annual review cycle and sits alongside achievement, pastoral care and professional development data. This data allows the school, departments and teachers to deeply dive into how students feel about their subjects and the broader teaching and learning of the school. Capturing as many student responses as possible helps the school live its vision of ‘Together as learners, we are inspired to grow’.

With winter sporting success coming thick and fast, Director of Sport Dan Meade has put together a newsletter below to keep you updated with all sporting codes.

I would also like to remind the school community that we have an extended mid-term break from Thursday, 25 August to Monday, 29 inclusive. This is the consolidation of a PPTA Accord Day and two teacher-only days. This year we a trialling this approach to minimise ongoing disruption to the school term.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

Off-field Sports Uniforms

A reminder that off-field sports uniforms are available online for purchase by clicking on this link  https://pureathletic.co.nz under the ‘Schools and Clubs’ tab. A great place to start is the hoodie with a long or short sleeve tee (speak to your coach to clarify which one they prefer you to have).

Please note, all first team players will be provided with ‘off-field’ kit for the season.

REMINDER - These clothing items are not part of the school uniform and cannot be worn during school hours.

Eagles Golf Tournament
Unfortunately the Mount Maunganui College Golf team had a couple of key members go down sick prior to the Eagles Golf Tournament but it didn’t stop the rest of the team having a great day on the course.

Junior Girls Futsal
Mount Maunganui College Junior Girls Futsal team headed to Napier during the school holidays to compete in the Onsite Services Youth Futsal Tournament 2022. It was great for these girls to have the opportunity to play in a tournament after the cancellation of the NZSS Futsal Nationals in March. The team was the only school team entered, with the other teams being from clubs or academies meaning they can pick the best players from the area rather than just the college.

The girls had a slow start losing their first two games but they came out fighting on the second day, showing determination and grit, and made it to the finals on goal difference. It was a ‘best of two’ final with the first game ending in a draw. This meant it was that it came down to the final game the next day. MMC Junior Girls showed what they were made of by winning a very tough game v Hamilton Titians 3-2, much to the delight of their coach Neve Simpson and their supporters. Well done girls! The future of girls Futsal at MMC is looking bright.

Senior Girls Futsal
With the girls from the MMC Senior Premier team being unavailable for the Onsite Services Youth Futsal Tournament 2022 it gave us the opportunity to offer the ‘tournament experience’ to some other girls. We managed to get five willing and capable girls, just enough to make up the team. A special thanks to Olivia Collett from Aquinas College who joined this team after playing for Mount Maunganui College in Term 1. Knowing that we could call on Neve Simpson, the coach of the Junior Girls and some of the junior girls players if needed, we headed down to Napier. The girls knew that they were very unlikely to win, playing club and academy teams, but they were certainly going to give it their best and have fun. Which is what they did.

Thanks to Neve, and Rosa Kelly, who played when they weren’t coaching or playing for the Junior Girls team, this team not only managed to score a few goals against some top teams, they also stopped a lot being scored against them! In fact, Goalie Amber Johnston got MVP for the U16/18 girls division because she was so busy, and made some good saves, all with a smile on her face! The rest of the team battled and remained positive which is why they were awarded the Fair Play award for their division. Well done girls!

Bay of Plenty Secondary School Basketball Championships
The BOP Junior Basketball Champs were held on Friday 5 August with Senior Champs being held on Friday 12 August. Despite playing some great basketball, unfortunately, none of our teams made the semi finals. Big thanks to our staff who continue to support our basketballers to play. Official results and scores have not yet been released.

What’s coming up?

Winter Tournament Week
We have a number of teams away for Winter Tournament Week, held in Week 6. We wish all teams the best of luck and will be putting regular updates up on our Mount Maunganui College Sports social media pages to keep you informed. A big thanks to all our Coaches, Managers, Teachers in Charge and fundraising committees. A huge amount of work goes into making sure our rangatahi can take part and as a school we’re super grateful for the time and effort that goes into getting these tournaments off the ground.
