Tēnā koutou katoa

Last week was Winter Tournament, where many students travelled around the country representing the school in various sports. It was one of our most successful Winter Tournaments with phenomenal results. I was fortunate to catch several games over the week, and I was highly impressed with the standard of performance, fair play and absolute grit of all teams I watched. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all school community members who accompanied the groups. I appreciate your care and leadership, and we know these trips would not happen without your significant goodwill. Director of Sports Dan Meade has a full update below.

Our arts programme continues to influence the national scene with Micah and Their, There through to the national finals of the Smokefree Rockquest. It is a significant achievement for a school to have any groups make this final, let alone two. We also wish our DanceNZMade teams well as they head to Palmerston North in a couple of weeks to compete against schools from all over New Zealand.

Congratulations to our Community Leaders and their wider support network for running another successful Head Shave, raising over $1700 for Shave for a Cure. Thanks to all staff and students who put themselves forward for this great cause.

The Board of Members is reviewing our school cell phone policy. If you want your say, please familiarise yourself with the current guidelines here. The survey can be found here. There is a space for general comments related to the matter at the end of the survey.

Next week is Senior Assessment Week, an important checkpoint for students as we head into the NCEA examinations in term four. It is an opportunity to take stock of academic progress and make any adjustments as students work toward their goals for 2022. Attendance to these examinations and assessments is an expectation, not only as meaningful practise, but as the primary opportunity to provide evidence for any derived grades that may be required at the end of the year. Occasionally students have circumstances where they are unable to attend an NCEA examination through illness, and derived grades are used as evidence of achievement. Other issues impacting NCEA examinations are natural disasters or lockdowns, so students must take the school examinations seriously.

Mount Maunganui College was selected to pilot the new NCEA numeracy and literacy standards which are scheduled to become foundational to the qualification in 2024. At this point, there is limited opportunity for schools to engage with students and families around the results. We will ensure the school community is well-informed when further information becomes available.

I would like to acknowledge the Mount Maunganui College students who are out and about in our community supporting sports, culture and performing arts in our local primary and intermediate schools. I know many have been busy coaching and umpiring in the lead-up and during the AIMS Games, and we have many others supporting younger students in dance, choir and kapa haka. Service and contribution are vital elements in our strategic plan, so it is great to see so many students showing leadership and initiative.

It is appropriate to finish this newsletter with an acknowledgement of the passing of our Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II. As a result, the New Zealand flag will fly at half mast at Mount Maunganui College. Due to diverse and valid perspectives in our society, the passing of a Monarch may not have the significance to New Zealand as it did when her father, King George VI, passed in 1952. However, I believe her reign can teach our modern society the importance of service and duty.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

Pacific and Language Speech Awards

On Monday, 5 September, six students took part in the 2022 Waiariki Schools Pacific Speech and Languages Competition hosted by Pasifika in the Bay at the University of Waikato Tauranga Campus.

This was a great challenge for these students, speaking in front of a panel of judges and their peers from around the rohe.

We are very proud of Olive Coulthard, Year 9, Aperila Ioelu and Rhys-Rahera McLeod-Faka’Osilea, Year 10, Tasi Tusega and Junior Lopati Selau from Year 11 and Tuliana Ceinaturaga from Year 12.

Tuliana won the Fijian Language speech award, and Tasi Tusega won the Senior student English language Award.

This competition was an enriching celebration of Pasifika languages and culture, and the opportunity to hear rangatahi speak of their cultural heritage, history and topical issues such as climate change and social media was invaluable.

Fa'amalo, malo le taumafai to Tasi and Vinaka vakalevu na gugumatua to Tuliana.
