Tēnā koutou katoa.

Welcome to term four at Mount Maunganui College. This term always starts with a flurry of prizegiving activity as we celebrate our students' sporting, cultural and academic achievements. I look forward to seeing many of you at these events.

Celebrations aside, term four is the final opportunity for our students to lock and load their academic goals for 2022. Your child may need your support to encourage regular attendance and meet academic targets. Please contact the relevant teacher or dean (list) immediately if you have concerns about your child’s attendance or achievement progress.

Many students were actively involved in sporting and cultural activities over the break. Thank you to all community members who have supported these students. Director of Sports Dan Meade has provided an update below on many of these school and representative teams.

I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate Waruwhakamaharatanga Taoho, Libby Frazer and Daisy De La Haye. They were selected for the National Shakespeare Schools Production in Dunedin over the break. As mentioned in previous newsletters, it is a significant achievement to have this number of students selected. As a result of their efforts, both Daisey and Libby have earned places in the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company to perform at the Globe Theatre in London next year. This is well earned recognition for the work of these two students.

Please read the important update below from Tauranga City Council regarding Maunganui Road closures next week.

I look forward to finishing the year with our students constructively and positively. I appreciate all the community support we receive to make this possible.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

Maunganui Road Update

The contractor plans to close the south side of the road between 9am and 3pm Tuesday 25 October to Thursday 27 October to enable the planting of trees and installation of lights.

We have been assured that during this time families will have full access to the main and swimming pool carparks.  All drop offs and pickups will be as normal from the Golf Road end of Maunganui Road.

The bus bay will be obstructed by the closure so please do not park there.  The usual school buses shouldn’t be affected.

Parking

A reminder if you are parking around the school, to please do so safely and legally. Tauranga City Council Parking Officers will be regularly visiting the school area to support a safer environment for all road and footpath users.

Science News

Chemistry Olympiad

A small group of Y12 students sat the national Chemistry Olympiad entrance exam in September, with Sam Orsler and Tay Ririnui gaining a Silver Award and Jazmin Mitchell gaining a Bronze Award. All three of these students have been offered a place in the NZ Chemistry Olympiad training group which will require them to work independently over the summer before sitting another exam in March 2023, in order to progress to the next stage. This is a great accomplishment for these students and an excellent opportunity for them to extend their learning.

Year 10 Science Bay Conservation Trust/ Predator Free BOP visit

Year 10 Science students have recently been learning about the impact of climate change and pest species on our natural environment. This week, all Year 10 students attended a presentation from the Bay Conservation Trust and Predator Free BOP to learn about pest management in our local environment. Students learnt about the impact of pests such as possums, stoats and rats on our native bird populations, and how pest tracking and trapping programmes are being used to control them in the Bay of Plenty. This was a valuable session that enabled students to see kaitiakitanga in action in our local environment.

Year 11 Brittany Jenkins and Year 10 Sabine Atrill have been named in the Bay of Plenty Senior Women’s Cricket team, a fantastic achievement for anyone, let alone someone of their age. They travelled to Hawkes Bay to compete in the Hawke’s Bay Women’s Invitational T20 tournament. Brittany picked up figures of 10 for 2 and 24 for 1.

Jai Knight recently attended the Chiefs U18s Rugby Camp in Hamilton. His team played a game against the Blues U18s with the Chiefs getting the win and Jai gaining some great knowledge and experience for his rugby career moving forward.

James Walker and Kameo Wagner recently travelled to Hamilton to trial for the New Zealand U19 Volleyball team. We wish them the best of luck on their selection.

Van Fitzharris has been selected to trial for the New Zealand Under 16 Football Team. Van has been selected in the top 38 footballers from the North Island and heads to Auckland in late January to trial for the 18 man team to travel to Singapore and Malaysia in the 2023 April School holidays.

Isla Ganley has been selected in the New Zealand Secondary School Girls Football team for 2023. This is an amazing achievement for a year 12 student and just reward for all her hard work and effort. Unfortunately, Isla is unavailable for the tour to Dallas but we congratulate her on an amazing achievement in being selected.

Cameron Skilton and James Walker have been named in the New Zealand Youth Tournament Team from the 2022 flag football nationals.

The teams fought hard and showed they deserved to be there with the best in the country. The boys came 16th and the girls 17th. A massive thank you to the coaching and management staff as well as parents for their huge fundraising efforts.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Awards
Mount Maunganui College picked up Secondary School Programme of the Year at the recent Bay of Plenty Rugby Awards. This is great recognition for all the hard-working staff and members of the community who put so much time and aroha into our rugby programme.

Cricket tournament
The Cooney Lees and Morgan First XI cricket team were involved in a quadrangular tournament over the first week of the holidays, in preparation for the Northern Districts knockout tournament being held in the first weeks of term four.  While the game against Tauranga Boys College First XI was cancelled due to rain,  Mount Maunganui College did themselves proud in their first match against St Patrick's (Town) from Wellington, winning by nine wickets.  A rain interrupted following day saw Mount Maunganui College lose by 65 runs to a well organised Takapuna Grammar First XI.  As an additional match before the knockout tournament, the boys also played Lindisfarne College (Hastings), where our First XI had a narrow loss by 35 runs.

While these games were excellent preparation for our game this week against St Paul's Collegiate (Hamilton), our team was comprehensively outplayed, with St Paul's winning comfortably.  However, with such a young team, our First XI will no doubt look forward to summer tournament week (March 2023) as they have qualified for the ND finals based on last year's results.  A massive thanks to Mr Golding for his relentless efforts with this team and best of luck to our departing captain, Kade Smit.

St Patrick's Town 107/10 (T. Perry 3/16) lost to Mount Maunganui College 108/1 (H. Burns 49*, F. Tustin 31*) by 9 wickets.

Takapuna Grammar 318/6 (G. Tustin 2/28) beat Mount Maunganui College 253/10 (H. Burns 93, G. Tustin 54) by 65 runs.

Lindisfarne College 212/10 (J. Burgraaf 3/20, G. Tustin 3/40, B Rhodes 3/50) beat Mount Maunganui College 177/10 (K. Smit 56, J. Burgraaf 32) by 35 runs.

St Paul's Collegiate 229/10 (B. Rhodes 4/26) beat Mount Maunganui College 80/10 (C. MacDonald 33) by 149 runs.

Our Girls Team played two games against a strong Takapuna Grammar side, losing both games but gaining some great experience for upcoming games.
