Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa. As we emerge from our busy prizegiving season, I want to acknowledge all award winners for their efforts this year. Complete lists of award winners are listed below. They all stand on the shoulders of families, teachers and peers who push and encourage them to be their best. Congratulations to all students who have pursued their sporting, cultural and academic goals for 2022. NCEA exams are in full swing now, and I remind families that we are here to continue supporting your child until they transition into further study or employment. We are keen to hear from any family that feels their child needs more support to achieve their next steps. While senior examinations are on, the year is by no means over. To the families of our junior students who are still attending onsite, I apologise in advance for the slightly more fractured than usual end to the year with the Union Accord days and Paid Union Meeting scheduled for the last few weeks of term. We appreciate your support and patience. End of year junior assessments are underway currently, and these are a very important diagnostic tool to support student learning. It is vital students prioritise these assessments and ensure they are completed. The cellphone ban has commenced successfully, and I would like to thank those families that have supported our new policy when it has impacted on their child. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, our preference is that students do not bring phones to school as communication can occur through our front office if necessary. A huge thanks and congratulations to all our staff and students who supported a great day at Mount Maunganui Intermediate yesterday for Rā Whakangahou. It was awesome to have all our local schools come together to strengthen our culture and identity. We are looking forward to year 9 activities and year 10 camps coming up later in the term. Please keep an eye out for more information as we get closer to the time. Nga mihi, Alastair Sinton Principal |

______________________________________________________________ Students Signing OutAny students leaving school grounds during the day need to ensure the proper process is followed. Please support us by notifying reception if you need to collect your child from school and collect them from the front office. If a student presents to student reception looking to sign out, caregivers will be called to confirm. |
______________________________________________________________ SCIENCE NEWS CSI DAYSScience had the pleasure of hosting Tom and Allie from Crime Scene Investigators who are working with three Year 9 classes over three days. Students will have to work out fingerprints, DNA analysis from hair samples and fake blood, plus footwear marks to work out who committed the crime. Once they have worked out the suspect, they then have to explain the reasoning behind their choice. Tom has 35 years of experience as a CSI expert and now brings his knowledge to schools and businesses through Forensics Insight. This activity has been made possible by the Field Based STEM funding from the Ministry of Education. |

PLASTIC TRAWL TRIPScience was able to take out three Year 10 classes on The Bay Explorer courtesy of Partnership through Collaboration. While on board, students were able to trawl for various types of plankton, while also checking for microplastics. Students were also trolling for Kahawai, however, we had no luck with this. Richard de Hamil was also on board, as well as Ethan Russell, a Masters student from Waikato University, Marine Department. Richard brought activities such as marine animal identification charts, underwater fish cameras and salinity meters to check how salty the harbour was compared to the ocean. Ethan worked with the students to help them identify the various types of zooplankton and phytoplankton. This activity went down very well with the students, who were shocked to see so much life under the microscopes. |

Jazz musician Lauren Ellis brought her band from LA to do a workshop with our jazz band and after years of looking we have finally acquired a 100 year old baby grand piano. To celebrate the success of Rockquest, we worked with Astrolabe to put on a community concert for whānau and friends. This year will be finished off by releasing our original album, 2022, on 25 November. There will be an album release show at Totara St on 30 Nov. ______________________________________________________________ POLICIES AND PROCEDURESOur school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community. The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well-researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc. SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review. We invite you to visit the site at https://mmc.schooldocs.co.nz (note that there's no "www."). Our username is "mmc" and password "mana". |
