Tēnā koutou katoa

I would like to start this newsletter by welcoming our new families into our Mount Maunganui College community and acknowledge all existing families who continue to entrust us with their children's education. It has been a privilege to meet our new Year 9 students and their families over the past few days, and we are looking forward to welcoming our full school back next week.

I also extend a warm welcome to our new staff members.

  • Rachel Armishaw - Business Manager
  • Margaret Bensley - English Teacher
  • Kiely Cummings - Special Education
  • Tricia Lawerence - Social Sciences Teacher
  • Gene McNae - Technology Teacher
  • Natalie Oliver-Caldwell - Mathematics Teacher
  • Jeff Roberts - Technology Teacher
  • Jo Smith - Mathematics Teacher
  • Katy Taylor-Mills - English Teacher
  • Glenn Tuahine - HOD Digital Technologies

The team at Mount Maunganui College are keen to provide our community with the stability and continuity we know our children need to succeed at school. With the worst pandemic-driven restrictions behind us, we are looking forward to returning to ‘business as usual’.

The Waterpolo tour to Australia over the summer break was a great example of this. Well done, and thank you to our staff, families and students who worked hard to complete our first post-Covid overseas trip. A quick update on the trip and other sporting achievements is available in the sports section of this newsletter below.

I would also like to remind our families of our rules regarding cell phones at school that were implemented last year. Cell phones are not to be used during class time under any circumstances and will be confiscated if seen. We request that families talk with their children about this before allowing their child to come to school with a phone. Our enhanced Bring Your Own Device initiative will ensure students can access appropriate teaching and learning online in a safe and carefully managed way.

It is an opportune time to remind families that our school uniform requirements will be strictly enforced. Any students unable to access appropriate uniform items will be provided with them if required. Thanks to our wonderful Parent Support Group, who co-ordinated and ran the annual second-hand uniform sale late last month.

Student attendance will continue to be a focus for this year, so please support the school in encouraging good attendance and communicating absences promptly. Our Raukura teachers, deans and senior leaders will be communicating any behaviour or attendance concerns if required. Still, they are also there to support all students through their journey and are an important conduit between the school and families. Should you have any concerns regarding your child’s experience at Mount Maunganui College please do not hesitate to contact the relevant staff member.

2023 is also the year when we review our strategic plan. Our existing plan has ensured progress throughout the school and continues to support teaching, learning and leadership through challenging times. We will be seeking community feedback on a renewed strategic plan later in the year. Before then, I was fortunate enough to have been awarded a short sabbatical commencing later this term to investigate how Mount Maunganui College can continue to improve the experience of all stakeholders. During my leave, Associate Principal Tina Yule will move into the Acting Principal role.

Exciting times are ahead for Mount Maunganui College in 2023, I am looking forward to working alongside you all.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

BYOD

Just a reminder that Mount Maunganui College is now a BYOD school. We expect students to bring an appropriate learning device such as a Chromebook, laptop or tablet with keyboard to school everyday to support and enhance their learning.

We have a small number of Mount Maunganui College Chromebooks that we can lend out to students for the year. If you are unable to purchase an appropriate learning device for your student and would like a school Chromebook to use in 2023, please complete this Chromebook Loan Agreement Google Form by clicking here.

Please contact Assistant Principal, Renee Draffin by emailing reneed@mmc.school.nz if you have any questions or queries.

What’s coming up?

We will be into the full swing of the Summer sports season before we know it. The best place to get all the information regarding muster and trial dates is the daily notices. Although we encourage students to take responsibility for themselves, parents and caregivers can access these at; https://www.mmc.school.nz/NEWS-1/Daily-Notices

Futsal

Registrations are now open for registering to play Futsal in Term 1, 2023. We must have our teams registered with WaiBOP before 8 February. As a result, our cut off date for registration is Monday 6 February to allow us time to create teams and register them with WaiBOP. Please register at https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/155881

Dates and Venues

The leagues in Term 1 will be as follows:

Sundays – 12th February to the 2nd April (Sundays, 6 weeks – no games 12th & 26th March)

Mondays (Futsal Premiership) - 13th February to the 3rd April (Mondays, 7 weeks - no games 27th March)

Volleyball

Tauranga Volleyball host a weekly league on Tuesday nights (A Grade) and Wednesday (Social) at QEYC in Tauranga starting 14 February 2023.

Any student interested in playing in this league,  should come and register their full team (minimum 6 players) in the Sports Office. If they cannot get a group of friends together to play, they can register themselves individually and we will do our best to find them a team.

Teams need to be registered at school by 9 February so teams can be registered with Tauranga Volleyball Club.

Competitive Junior Volleyball is played in Term 4 and trials for these teams will be advertised in the daily news in Term 2.

Waterpolo

Typically Junior Waterpolo is played in Term 4. However, there may be opportunities for junior players to train and potentially compete in a senior league. Please keep an eye on the Daily Notices for more details.

Cricket

All boys and girls interested in playing Cricket are encouraged to register and play for their club. There will be a fixture or two organised for Junior players in Term 1 to give them an opportunity to represent Mount Maunganui College. Note, this will not impact them playing for their club. Keep an eye on the Daily News for details.

Rowing

Unfortunately rowers cannot start in Term 1 due to the timing of the season and must wait until Term 3.

Surfing
We offer two levels of Surfing. Progressive Surfing for students who are new to the sport or at an average level and our Surf Academy for our top surfers. The Academy Group will be selected from surf competition results.

Students interested in Progressive Surfing should contact Miss Grimmer on alishag@mmc.school.nz or see her in the science block.

Touch
Touch is generally played in Term 4 with local touch competitions catering to secondary school teams in Term 4 only. With recent changes in staffing, we will look into options in Term 1. Please keep an eye on the daily notices for updates.

Mount Maunganui College Sports Academy
The Mount Maunganui College Sports Academy is open to all athletes from all sports at Mount Maunganui College. The programme is resourced by The Athlete Factory and supported by local sponsors in the Mount Maunganui/Tauranga Community which keeps the cost at a minimum for our athletes.

The purpose of the Academy is to provide our students with professional coaching to support their development as athletes and is open to athletes of all levels. It is fantastic that we can offer this level of support to our students who want to be the best they can be.
