Tēnā koutou katoa

As we move into Term Two, we reflect on the past few weeks' events and are proud to say that our students have once again represented our school community in a positive and meaningful way.

We want to extend a sincere thank you to all of the students who supported the Anzac Day services this year. James Walker and Keilani Horne spoke at the Civic Service and did an excellent job of representing our school community. Mackenzie Willson's rendition of the National Anthem. We would also like to acknowledge Emily Tattersall's continued dedication to singing the anthems at the Dawn Service over the years. Joseph O'Connor, our Cultural Leader, delivered an outstanding Anzac speech at the Bayswater Retirement Village. The event was a resounding success and was enjoyed by all.

A huge thank you to the Careers Department for organising an outstanding Tertiary Awareness event. The informative and engaging sessions were a tremendous success, and we are grateful for the hard work and dedication of the department in making it happen. We are delighted to report that a large number of Year 11 students attended the session, despite being rostered to learn from home.

We are sorry for the disruption to the learning of your children. We understand the importance of uninterrupted education and are aware of the inconvenience and frustration caused by the current situation. We assure you that we are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. The continued industrial action has created some challenges. We are hopeful that the matter will be quickly settled, and we will keep you updated on any developments. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time.

Ngā mihi nui,

Tina Yule
Acting Principal

PSG GOLF TOURNAMENT

After a two-year hiatus due to Covid, the Mt Maunganui College Parent Support Group were able to run its annual Golf Day Fundraiser at the Mt Maunganui Golf Club on Sunday.

The persistent easterly wind and rain paused long enough for 128 enthusiastic golfers and non-golfers to negotiate their way around 18 holes for an afternoon of golf in teams of 4.

A few tailenders got caught in a late shower, but everyone finished and got a scorecard in before it got too dark.

The clubhouse was full of supportive local businesspeople, college staff, and students, setting the scene and atmosphere for a speedy prizegiving, auction, and raffle of donated goods and services worth more than $10k.

From locally brewed beer and locally produced sausages to pot plants, wine, Mother’s Day gift packs, a BBQ, and even a Vasectomy, there was literally something for everyone.

While the total amount of money raised is still to be finalised, the PSG are confident they will cover the cost of the new sound system for the Mount Maunganui College Hall.

The final result will be published once all the numbers are in.

It would be fair to say the day was a resounding success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who were there.

A huge vote of thanks to the PSG team who organised the event, along with all the businesses and community members who supported the day.

OUTKASTS QUALIFY FOR WORLD CHAMPS

OutKasts have qualified once again for the Hip Hop International World Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. The crew recently competed at the National Championships in Auckland and placed second in the country. An outstanding achievement! They’ll head to Phoenix in August to represent New Zealand on the world stage at what is like the Olympics of hip hop.

OutKasts are an eight-member hip hop crew, five of which are Mount Maunganui  College students. They train at Space Studios over in Tauranga.

The crew are back on the fundraising wagon, raising funds to help with the cost of getting over to the States. There will be a Mama’s Donuts sale at school next Friday, 26 May, at morning tea and lunchtime to support OutKasts in their fundraising efforts. Your support would be so appreciated.

Let’s go OutKasts!

Back: Austin Taylor, Connor Settle-Smith, Noah Ball and Jonah Stewart

Front: Sienna Lagerberg, Ella Radovanovich, Maia Hemana and Baylee Murray.
