Kia ora tātou e te whānau,

I acknowledge your patience during a complicated and disruptive term. I accept that the Ministry of Education and the Post-Primary Teachers' Associations' inability to agree on working conditions has harmed school operations and negatively impacted student learning and overall school experience. I remain optimistic that a positive outcome will be achieved through mediation, and I am hopeful that future disruption can be avoided. That said, there is potentially some distance to travel before a resolution is found. While negotiations remain ongoing, we will keep the community updated and continue to try and minimise the negative impact of any further industrial action.

On a much more positive note, several significant annual events have taken place recently with great success. Polar Plunge 2023 was again well supported by students and the wider community. This event is a fundraiser and awareness campaign supporting the New Zealand Blood Cancer and Leukemia Foundation. Special thanks to our Sports Leaders, Jackson and Brooklyn, for helping pull this together and to Alan Mundy and Omanu Surf Lifesaving Club for their support.

Jackson and Brooklyn were back in action this Thursday with our annual Lynfield Sports Exchange. This is always a highly anticipated event with 65 years of history on the line. This unbroken exchange between our schools dates back to when both schools were founded in the late 1950s. This year Lynfield made the trip south, and all matches were played in great spirit. I am pleased to write that this year, we not only retained the trophy but we completed a rare ‘clean sweep’ across all codes.

Looking forward to next term, I want to draw your attention to a slight change to our school interviews scheduled for week one of next term. For many years these have occurred on a Thursday evening and throughout the day on Friday. Acknowledging the impact of the disrupted teaching and learning time we faced this year, we have shortened the interviews to Thursday night only, with regular lessons resuming on Friday. There are other dates later in the year that we have committed to, such as the Ministry of Education mandated teacher-only days, that will proceed as planned.

Keep an eye out on our school calendar for evening events such as Structuring a Senior Course and Careers Evening, as these are excellent opportunities for families to continue learning about NCEA pathways and support their child’s academic journey.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s journey through Mount Maunganui College, do not hesitate to get in touch.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

UNIFORM

This a reminder to all families to make sure their child’s uniform meets our guidelines, for next term. We are continuing to see students with non-polishable shoes and incorrect socks.

Please ensure your child is also adhering to our jewellery standards. No septums or rings are permitted on the face.

Our discipline and defiance procedures will deal with ongoing uniform issues if not resolved promptly.

The Sports Department has updated their Social Media pages. Please follow us on.

Mount Maunganui College has been part of the Trees that Count programme that has provided 2000 native trees this year, and 4400 trees since the project started in 2020. Mr Devery and his Horticulture students have planted all these native trees, with a 100% survival rate. The carbon these trees and native shrubs will take out the atmosphere over 50 years is 1601.86 tonnes, according to https://toolkit.tanestrees.org.nz/carbon-calculator/

The link below will take you to the Mount Maunganui College site for more information about the programme
