Kia ora tātou e te whānau,

Welcome to a new school term. It was great to see so many of you at our school interviews on Wednesday evening. The modified version of our school interview programme allowed us to create more teaching in learning time to occur in recognition of the disruptions of last term, so we appreciate your support and understanding of the slightly faster-paced meetings with teachers.

It is always a good time to check in on your child’s progress, and this term is significant to ensure they are on track to meet their goals for 2023. Our internal tracking processes help us identify overall student needs that classroom teachers might not be aware of. Your child’s raukura teacher, dean, or senior leader are essential contact people if you have general concerns about your child.

Many Mount Maunganui College students represented the school in various activities over the school break. Please take the time to read through and see the achievements and experiences they have availed themselves of in academic, cultural, and sporting realms. Thanks to the staff, parents, and community members who make these opportunities possible and congratulations to the students making the most of their time at Mount Maunganui College. Young people need to remain engaged in pro-social activities to support their motivation, well-being and sense of connection, and occasionally, they need a nudge in the right direction. Feel free to get in touch if you need some support in this area.

Finally, please check out our key dates section at the bottom of this newsletter, as many significant events are upcoming. Our Careers Pathway evening is happening next week, which is an excellent opportunity to meet with curriculum specialists, businesses, employers and tertiary institutions to help provide students with the opportunity to explore future career and study options.

Here’s to another busy term.

Ngā mihi nui

Principal

CONGRATULATIONS

Climate Ambassador Programme

The University of Waikato ran a Climate Ambassador Programme where students sat a Level One Climate Change Paper during term one and two, while attending the University on two separate days to engage with other Year 13 students from around the Bay of Plenty and Waikato as well as lecturers and local professionals.  Mount Maunganui College had three students enrolled in the Climate Ambassador Programme, Jazmin Mitchell, Tay Ririnui and Chloe Wong.

All three students gained an A+, while a special mention to Tay for attaining a 97.3% score which meant he had the highest grade of anyone sitting the paper, and this included first-year university students.

All three students enjoyed participating with students from other schools.  They found working with other passionate students enabled them to gain a deeper insight into the issues associated with the Climate Crisis.  During the two days at the University in Hamilton, the way these days were organised meant Jazmin, Tay and Chloe were inspired and motivated to come up with solutions to complex problems linked to local issues.

While the two days were set up to deal with local problems, the three students also had to watch online lectures, have online discussions weekly with local students as well as hand in assignments!

Jazmin, Tay and Chloe all found the experience a positive one.  And the advice they would give to students who are thinking about enrolling in the course is to give it a go.   Dedication, care for, and motivation to learn about the Climate Crisis will stand you in good stead while having a belief in your ability as you are taught everything you need to know.  The course will take a commitment of two to three hours a week, however, this commitment will be worthwhile by the end of the paper.

RAROTONGA TRIP

Talofa lava, mālō e lelei, ni sa bula, namaste, kia orāna, fakalofa lahi atu, mālo ni, fakatalofa atu, mauri, kia ora koutou, and warm Pacific Greetings,

Malo Uma Pasifika would like to sincerely thank the Board, our supportive staff and our Pasifika whanau for their support of our Cultural Exchange trip to Rarotonga.
The experience was life-changing for some of our students, some of whom had never flown before, let alone travelled internationally.

From the early morning start on Day 1 to our missed domestic flight home, we had one big adventure!  The group met students from Tereora College, A Waka (Wa’a) Pioneer from Hawaii and his family, cultural experts and historians. They experienced song and dance and traditional Cook Island umu feasting.  There was sport and trekking, arts and crafts and lots of performance opportunities.

We had torrential rain and hot sun, lots of trips to the shops and ‘the dairy’!  Everyone went to church on Sunday and then had Raro doughnuts afterwards at the beach.  Snorkelling exposed some students to the delights of seeing sea life up close for the first time, and being warm and swimming when everyone at home was having winter weather was very pleasant.

We can not thank you enough, the Mount Maunganui College Board, the staff who helped us endlessly in our preparation -  Corrine Bartram, Rachel Armishaw, Marie Devery, Mel Knill; and our financial sponsors, Pasifika in the Bay, Aifai Esera from Pacific Growth Services, and Ana Bryant for making the trip possible.

To our parent helpers, Kelly Anderson, who supported us in our housekeeping challenges, and Troye Elvin, who took most of the amazing images and prepared the following videos, our alumni sibling traveller, Courtney Pedersen - thanks for the memories!

UNIFORM

This a reminder to all families to make sure their child’s uniform meets our guidelines, for next term. We are continuing to see students with non-polishable shoes and incorrect socks.

Please ensure your child is also adhering to our jewellery standards. No septums or rings are permitted on the face.

Our discipline and defiance procedures will deal with ongoing uniform issues if not resolved promptly.
