Kia ora tātou e te whānau, It has been a great pleasure getting to many Winter Tournament Week games. I have been thoroughly impressed with the standard of performance of our students. They play with grit and commitment but maintain integrity in the spirit of fair play. Each team has shown an outstanding commitment to each other and a belief in their collective ability to challenge all opposition. None of this is possible without the tremendous support we receive from parents, staff and other community members who have coached, managed, planned and fundraised to give our students the best possible experience. This commitment and support for our school reflects in all areas: sports, the arts, culture and other co-curricular activities. Thanks to all our volunteers. We are grateful for your time, skills and energy. It was a big week for our performing arts students last week, with Dramafest and Dance night during the week. There were some beautiful performances, including a fantastic version of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible by our Year 13 Drama students. Saturday night saw many of our talented musicians perform at the Astrolabe Bar. This event was an excellent opportunity for our students to get real-world gig experience. Thanks to all our families and friends who supported this event and to all our talented performing arts teachers for pulling it together. Next week, the city will host the AIMS Games. Good luck to all our future students participating, and thanks to current students who are coaching, managing and officiating these games. Movement around the city can be challenging over this time, so please plan to ensure your children get to school on time. Ngā mihi nui, Alastair Sinton Principal |

______________________________________________________________ NGĀ TOKA O TIRIKAWA - KAPAHAKA GROUPI eke a Ngā Toka o Tirikawa ki te mura o te ahi i Ngā Whakataetae Kapa Haka mō ngā Kura Tuarua o Mataatua, Takitimu ki Tauranga Moana ki Ohui. Tūtū ana te pūehu a ngā tamariki. Heke ana ngā roimata i te ataahua o ngā mahi. 20 tau neke atu te wā whakamutunga i tū tētahi kapa o te kura, i kōnei ka mea ake, kua angitū a mātau tauira. I haere hei kanohi mō te kura, mō te moana o Tauranga. I haere tauira atu, i hoki rangatira mai, i whakatinanahia te whakatauki, "He toroa whakakopa au nō runga i Karewa, he pōtiki manawa ū nō Ngāi Te Rangi.” Ngā Toka o Tirikawa took the stage at Mataatua, Takitimu ki Tauranga secondary school kapa haka regionals in Opotiki after being absent from this competition for over 20 years. Parents were overwhelmed with happiness, and the reactions and feedback from the crowd were very positive. The students performed as a representation of the school and Tauranga Moana. All of the students embodied the proverb "He toroa whakakopa au nō runga i Karewa, he pōtiki manawa ū nō Ngāi Te Rangi" which means "I am a soaring albatross high above Kārewa, a stout-hearted child that belongs to Ngāi Te Rangi." |

The Mount Maunganui College Music department has been quite busy in the last few weeks. On 11 August, we took a group of students to the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival, where our talented Mt. Maunganui College Music Showcase, comprising the Jazz Band, Senior Jazz Combo, and Guitar Group, took the stage. The event was a resounding success, with both students and staff thoroughly enjoying the fantastic weather and even more remarkable performances. One audience member summed up the experience by saying, "Wow, it was fantastic! What struck us was how fortunate those kids are to have teachers as obviously enthusiastic, talented, and wonderful as you both are. I'm certain that some of those children will never forget the time spent at those performances, and the education you are providing goes well beyond teaching music... I wish all teachers were as amazing." |

Rockquest On August 26th, the MMC Rockquesters put on an awesome show at our local Astrolabe venue. The lineup included Park Flyers, Slimpeeper, Bliss, The Teahouse, Catie Anderson, and Dylan Mortimore. The event drew a great turnout, and the audience had an incredible time. |
Studio 11b This week, our up-and-coming songwriters were busy recording at Studio 11b for the new 2023 Original Album, scheduled to be released around week 3 of term 4. Stay tuned! |

______________________________________________________________ WAKA KOTAHI UPDATE Tēnā koe,
Te Maunga interchange, at the State Highway 2 and 29A intersection at Baypark, is scheduled to fully open to traffic next week. The interchange has been operating without its fourth ramp since its partial opening in 2022. The remaining ramp is scheduled to open in mid-August and will temporarily take all traffic from SH2/TEL/Pāpāmoa over the newly signalised interchange. This change will enable SH2 at ground level, underneath the interchange, to be completed. The traffic switch, including opening the ramp, the commissioning of new traffic lights on Te Maunga interchange and the closure of SH2 northbound underneath the interchange, is scheduled to take place from Sunday 13 August to Wednesday 16 August and will mean changes for people travelling on SH2 from Pāpāmoa and SH29A from Maungatapu. You’ll find further information below and online at nzta.govt.nz/temaunga We would appreciate if you could include any of the below information in your communication channels. Please let us know if you require any further information. Ngā mihi, Baypark to Bayfair Project Team |
