Kia ora tātou e te whānau,

Welcome to the final term for 2023.

Last night, we celebrated and acknowledged our hardworking performing arts students at our annual awards at Baycourt. Congratulations to Abby Lindsey and Daisy de la Haye for earning the overall performing arts award for 2023. This event is the first of many this term and was a spectacular way to kick off prizegiving season. The depth, breadth and scale of achievements are a testament to the thousands of hours that students, staff and parents have invested in our Arts programme for 2023. Congratulations to all award winners and every student involved in our programme, and thank you to our teachers and community members who make it all possible.

Alongside our celebrations, students remain hard at work, finishing assignments and preparing for NCEA examinations. Our current data tracking mechanisms indicate that 2023 will be another strong year of achievement for our senior students. Many have already met the requirements for NCEA, and those students should be working toward Merit and Excellence endorsements. All students should keep a keen eye on what they need to succeed academically next year, ensuring they are meeting the entry requirements for the courses they are hoping to enter.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have concerns about your child’s progress at Mount Maunganui College.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

NCEA CHANGES 2024 AND 2025

You may know that NCEA is changing. As a student, the main thing you might notice is a stronger focus on Literacy and Numeracy.

You might also notice changes in how you are assessed, with more assessments being done online or submitted to NZQA through their website.

What you need for NCEA in 2024 and 2025

For NCEA in 2024 and 2025, you will need:

  • 60 credits at the Level (or above) of the qualification you are working towards
  • Literacy – 10 credits from Literacy standards (corequisites), or from a list of specified standards in a range of subjects
  • Numeracy – 10 credits from Numeracy standards (corequisites), or from a list of specified standards in a range of subjects.

You only need to meet the literacy and numeracy requirements once, and you do not need to attempt them again for other levels of NCEA.  If you haven't quite finished your NCEA at the end of the year you can still start working towards the next level.

What else is changing

  • Schools will use new standards when they develop courses for NCEA Level 1 in 2024, NCEA Level 2 in 2026, and NCEA Level 3 in 2027.
  • There will still be exams at the end of the year, but you might also complete external assessments during the year, for example submitting reports and portfolios, or attempting Common Assessment Activities for literacy and numeracy.
  • More external assessments will be done online or uploaded to NZQA through their website.
  • Literacy and numeracy assessments may be offered in Year 10.

What is staying the same

  • Any credits you have already earned can be used towards the new NCEA.
  • You can still use Unit Standards and Achievement Standards towards NCEA.
  • Course and certificate endorsement requirements remain the same.
  • You can still study at different levels of NCEA in the same year.
  • If you met the literacy and numeracy requirements in 2023 or earlier, you do not need to attempt them again.
  • There is still no time limit on completing NCEA. If you have part of a qualification, you can return to study at any time.

Attendance and engagement in school have been declining since 2015 and were further impacted by COVID- 19. This decline in school attendance has been experienced by every ethnicity, decile, year level and region. Alongside parents, schools and kura are responsible for ensuring all ākonga attend school every day it is open for instruction.

The Ministry of Education has provided additional funding to assist with attendance in the 70-90% zone. In our Mount Maunganui region, we have a newly appointed Education Engagement Liaison who will be working alongside our schools to lift attendance and engagement. As parents and caregivers, you may see increased communication and focus around your child's attendance.

The importance of regular attendance cannot be underestimated as missing just two days a term is linked to students not doing as well. Regular attendance has a big impact; the more often students attend school, the better they do at school, the happier they are, and the better they are set up for life. School attendance is the most crucial prerequisite for quality education - students cannot learn if they are not in school. EVERY DAY MATTERS.

The Education Review Office (ERO) has published an article about their findings on research into student attendance and how parents and whānau can support their children in attending school, click here to view.

DEBATING TEAM

The debating team were busy over the Term 3 holidays.

On Saturday 23 September, the NZ Schools' Debating Council hosted a regional tournament for the Bay of Plenty in the British Parliamentary style of debating. In this format, four teams of two participate in the same debate to resemble Parliament. Out of more than 30 teams from around the Bay of Plenty, Luca Ririnui and Jenna Adlington won a heated Grand Final to take out the championship. Luca was named Best Speaker of the Tournament.

On Tuesday 26 September, the UN Youth Association hosted a BOP Model United Nations event for the first time since 2019. More than 70 students from around the region spent the day at Waikato University's Tauranga campus, debating various UN resolutions from the perspective of countries assigned to them. Shiana French was one of four students to receive a Judge's Award. Luca is credited with helping to facilitate the event as a Chairperson.

Luca Ririnui, Keenan McGregor, Elly Shirley, Maggie Reaves, Belle Rowe, and Maddison Tuaa are commended for participating in both tournaments.

ROAD SAFETY REMINDERS

With the changes to Maunganui Road we would like to draw your attention to our driveway access points. With the addition of the cycle lane, we ask all families to take extra care when entering and exiting our school. Cyclists can move very quickly along that path and we need everyone to share that space with caution.

We have also noticed an increase in families dropping students on the opposite side of Maunganui Road. While the improvements have made this a safer option than in the past, there is still a lot of heavy traffic moving along the road. Please consider safe drop off points for students (it doesn’t hurt them to walk a few blocks!).

UNIFORM

This a reminder to all families to make sure their child’s uniform meets our guidelines, for next term. We are continuing to see students with non-polishable shoes and incorrect socks.

Please ensure your child is also adhering to our jewellery standards. No septums or rings are permitted on the face.

Our discipline and defiance procedures will deal with ongoing uniform issues if not resolved promptly.

MAIN ENTRANCE

We respectfully request parents not to use the staff car park for student pick-up after school.  The main entrance gates will be locked before the end of the day.

FOOTPATH CLOSURE

As part of the Baypark to Bayfair Link project, works will start to construct three permanent overhead signs on SH2/Maunganui Road, and includes a temporary detour for pedestrians. This work is currently scheduled to start from early morning on Tuesday 24 October and continue until late 2023, assuming favourable weather and ground conditions.

While the works are underway, the footpath on SH2/Maunganui Road between Spur Avenue and Bayfair Shopping Centre’s Countdown entrance will temporarily close 24/7. As pictured, a signposted pedestrian detour via Spur Avenue, Links Avenue, Concord Avenue, Harris Street and Bayfair Shopping Centre’s Countdown entrance will apply.

People walking and cycling are asked to take extra care.

Vehicle and pedestrian access to all Maunganui Road properties will be retained at all times.

For more information on the Bay Link project please visit nzta.govt.nz/baylink.  You can also register for traffic notices at nzta.govt.nz/baylink-traffic.
