Kia ora tātou e te whānau, We concluded our Academic Prizegiving on Monday, and it is wonderful to see our students continually setting higher academic standards every year. Students across the school are always encouraged to challenge themselves and develop their academic rigour, so all students should be congratulated for their efforts this year. Congratulations to Tay Ririnui for earning the Rotary Mount Maunganui College Dux for 2023. Congratulations to Katie Parkinson, who earned our second top award, ITed Proxime Accessit. Last week, the depth of sporting talent was on full display at our annual sports awards. This year was our largest sports awards evening, with many students earning recognition at the highest levels possible. Congratulations to Talitha McEwan and James Walker for earning the 2023 top sports awards. Congratulations to Ruru House for winning the 2023 house competition and earning the Walsh Shield. The shield dates back to the school opening in 1957 and is named after George Augustus Walsh, the National Member of Parliament for Tauranga, from 1951 to 1972. This year, house points were earned across various school events supported and led by our student house leaders and house deans. Congratulations to every student who got involved. |

Term four is a busy time for our junior students as they work to complete end-of-year assessments and work towards activities for Year 9 and camps for Year 10. These opportunities outside the classroom are an important way for students to work with other students and staff to build key competencies that support them as learners and community members. As an essential part of the New Zealand Curriculum, the key competencies manifest in many ways throughout the school, and these events are a mandatory part of our junior curriculum. Please encourage your children to make the most of these opportunities. Finally, thanks to all the community members supporting our summer sports programme. A full update from our Director of Sport, Dan Meade, is available later in this newsletter. Ngā mihi, Alastair Sinton Principal |

______________________________________________________________ INSTEP YOUTH LEADERSPriority One's Instep Youth Leadership programme empowers youth by equipping them with the skills to become an effective leader. Four Mount Maunganui College students were selected for the programme this year. Jazmin Mitchell and Tay Ririnui in Year 13, and Sarah Adlam and Amber Peck in Year 12. The final session for these youth leaders was held on Thursday, 26 October; the students spoke about their growth over the year and their involvement in a range of community events. It is an awesome leadership experience that gives students the opportunity to meet and network with a number of business leaders from across the region. |

______________________________________________________________ ROAD SAFETY REMINDERSWith the changes to Maunganui Road we would like to draw your attention to our driveway access points. With the addition of the cycle lane, we ask all families to take extra care when entering and exiting our school. Cyclists can move very quickly along that path and we need everyone to share that space with caution. We have also noticed an increase in families dropping students on the opposite side of Maunganui Road. While the improvements have made this a safer option than in the past, there is still a lot of heavy traffic moving along the road. Please consider safe drop off points for students (it doesn’t hurt them to walk a few blocks!). ______________________________________________________________ |
 |
______________________________________________________________ UNIFORMThis a reminder to all families to make sure their child’s uniform meets our guidelines, for next term. We are continuing to see students with non-polishable shoes and incorrect socks. Please ensure your child is also adhering to our jewellery standards. No septums or rings are permitted on the face. Our discipline and defiance procedures will deal with ongoing uniform issues if not resolved promptly. |

______________________________________________________________ MAIN ENTRANCE We respectfully request parents not to use the staff car park for student pick-up after school. The main entrance gates will be locked before the end of the day. ______________________________________________________________ |

______________________________________________________________ NEW SIGNALISED ROUNDABOUTDriving, walking and cycling locally in the Matapihi and Arataki area will be safer with the new, signalised Bayfair roundabout becoming operational in early November 2023. The roundabout will return to two lanes and feature new traffic signals. For people driving, using the roundabout will be just like any signalised intersection where a prepared driver ensures they are in the correct lane and then follows the red to green light phase. The new traffic signals will provide a safe walking and cycling connection between the Arataki and Matapihi areas, making it easier for people to get through the intersection safely. As part of this, the pedestrian underpass will temporarily close. Plan ahead and take extra care while everyone – walking, cycling and driving – gets used to the new layout. For further information, visit www.nzsta.govt.nz/baylink |
 |
______________________________________________________________ FOOTPATH CLOSURE As part of the Baypark to Bayfair Link project, works will start to construct three permanent overhead signs on SH2/Maunganui Road, and includes a temporary detour for pedestrians. This work is currently scheduled to start from early morning on Tuesday 24 October and continue until late 2023, assuming favourable weather and ground conditions. While the works are underway, the footpath on SH2/Maunganui Road between Spur Avenue and Bayfair Shopping Centre’s Countdown entrance will temporarily close 24/7. As pictured, a signposted pedestrian detour via Spur Avenue, Links Avenue, Concord Avenue, Harris Street and Bayfair Shopping Centre’s Countdown entrance will apply. People walking and cycling are asked to take extra care. Vehicle and pedestrian access to all Maunganui Road properties will be retained at all times. For more information on the Bay Link project please visit nzta.govt.nz/baylink. You can also register for traffic notices at nzta.govt.nz/baylink-traffic. |
