Welcome to term two. I would like to open by extending my sincere gratitude to those students who represented the school at the ANZAC services last Friday. Special thanks to Head Boy Lucah Morresey and Student Leader Jess Sheaff for their meaningful speeches at the Civic Memorial Service, and to Lyla Courtney for her beautiful renditions of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems at the Dawn Service. It was a strong showing from Mount Maunganui College on the day, and it was a privilege to have witnessed it. It was also wonderful to see other students representing their youth military units throughout the ceremonies, including at the Chiefs' game on Friday night. |

There have been some very impressive sporting results, with many sports having national events over the break. Special congratulations to our Girls' 3x3 Basketball team for taking out the national title. The 21-13 result in the final against St Andrew's College underscored the girls' dominance in this event. Our boys were also represented and narrowly lost a very hard-fought semi-final. Thanks to all of our coaches and volunteers who supported our students over the break. A full round-up of recent results is available below. |

This Thursday, over 50 students from around the region descended on Mount Maunganui College for the Model United Nations event. This is the second time we've hosted this event, and I want to extend a huge thank you to Year 13 student Maggie Reaves for organising it. Congratulations to all Mount Maunganui College students involved. Well done to Head Girl Sienna Lagerberg, Montana Cullwick, Skye Faile, and Milan Brown on their recent dance success with Space Studio. Sienna earned the Dancer of the Year Award. A full update is available below. Term two is an important term for students as they should be well settled into their subjects and making academic progress. Year 10s and some Year 11s are working toward the NCEA Common Assessment Activities, and seniors should see their credit tally increase toward their respective NCEA goals. Families can support their children by checking in regularly with them about their academic progress. This can be as simple as asking them how many credits they have and how many are available throughout the term. If your child can’t explain or show you how they're progressing, that's a good indicator to get in touch with us here at school. Your first port of call is the subject teacher, followed by Raukura teacher, Dean and Senior Leader. Click here to view key contacts. The following eight weeks are a busy time with Arts, Sports, Cultural, and Academic programmes in full swing. It is vital that we work together to ensure our young people balance the competing demands of an active schedule. Here’s to another great term. Ngā mihi, Alastair Sinton Principal |

______________________________________________________________ CONGRATULATIONS …ProTeam's Stellar Performances at Auckland Competitions Over the school holidays, the Space Hip Hop crew, ProTeam, showcased their incredible talent on the national stage, competing in two major competitions in Auckland. This talented group includes our Head Girl, Sienna Lagerberg, as well as Montana Cullwick, Skye Faile, and Milan Brown. ProTeam’s first achievement came at the World Dance Crew Championships, where they placed an impressive 2nd in the Youth Super Crew division, securing silver medals in a highly competitive field. Just days later, ProTeam triumphed at the Hip Hop International World Qualifiers, winning first place in the Junior Varsity Mega Crew division. This victory earned them the honour of representing New Zealand at the World Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, in July – an incredible opportunity to showcase their talent on a global stage. Sienna Lagerberg, our talented Head Girl, was awarded Junior Varsity Dancer of the Year by the judges, a well-deserved recognition for her outstanding performance and dedication. We are incredibly proud of Sienna, Montana, Skye, and Milan for their achievements and wish them the best of luck as they prepare to represent New Zealand at the World Championships! Their hard work, dedication, and passion for dance continue to inspire us all. |

______________________________________________________________ UNIFORMThanks to all our families who ensure our students head off to school in the correct school uniform. We know you have high expectations of how our students present themselves, so we appreciate your support. Occasionally, students present to school in incorrect uniforms, and it can be disappointing for staff to have to start the day by having a negative conversation with a student about uniforms. Here are some reminders to help ensure your child has a positive start to the day: - Uniform guidelines.
- As per the Board approved uniform the school skirt is not to have the length modified (eg shortened).
- If sandals are worn they must be black and have a back strap.
- If shoes are worn they must be completely black and polishable.
- Please ensure your child also adheres to our jewellery standards. No septums or rings are permitted on the face.
- Eyelash extensions are not permitted.
- We would like to remind families that only Mount Maunganui College trousers are to be worn. These can only be purchased from NZ Uniforms.
- Students can wear a non-regulation waterproof jacket to and from school on wet days.
- Discipline and defiance procedures will be used to deal with ongoing uniform issues if not resolved promptly.

______________________________________________________________ VEHICLE SAFTEYKia ora Students and Whanau If your child drives to school in their car or on their motorbike/ moped, please have a conversation with them about the appropriate use of their vehicle. - We have noticed a few things at school.
- Students on restricted licenses are bringing passengers to and from school.
- Students on mopeds are taking up multiple parks around the streets when there is a designated area for mopeds.
- A small number of students are not following road rules when leaving school, particularly in Macville Park, which poses a danger to themselves and others, often speeding or swerving between cars on scooters.
A reminder that our school area is very busy at the beginning and end of each day with neighbouring primary schools, early childcare centres and many members of the public. It is great to see our students working towards and obtaining their licence, but that also comes with great responsibility. Our priority is keeping our students and those who use adjoining roads safe, so we appreciate your support with this. |

______________________________________________________________ SCHOOL ACCESS AND VISITOR PARKINGWe acknowledge that the new school development will mean additional difficulties for some families accessing the school during drop off and pick up times. The previous ‘main’ school carpark has now only one point of entry and exit, thereby making it inappropriate for drop off and pick ups and is now restricted to visitor parking only. If you do have to use this gate when visiting the school, be mindful of cars entering and exiting. See the map below that designates visitor parking. The new staff carpark now has barrier arms and is limited to staff parking only. The arms will be down from 7:30 am through to 3:20 pm during weekdays. Outside of these hours the carpark will remain open to all. If you plan on picking up and dropping off your child before and after school, this needs to happen on the surrounding streets. |

______________________________________________________________ ATTENDANCE MATTERSPlease see attached the revised attendance codes from the Ministry of Education, which have come into full effect this year. You will see that these attendance codes now fall into the three categories. The only category contributing to our student's present attendance percentage is the codes under “Present for ½ day calculations”. The other codes under “Justified absence” and “Unjustified absence” do not contribute towards the Ministry of Education’s present percentage. This allows schools and whānau to see an accurate indication of a student's presence at school. ______________________________________________________________ SCHOOL BUS SERVICEThis is a reminder to families that the school has a very efficient bus service. This service will ensure your child arrives at school on time and is ready for period 1 classes. While students can use the commercial bus service free during school hours provided they have a BEE card they cannot guarantee that they will arrive ready for an 8.45 am start. Many of these services mean that students are missing up to 30 minutes of learning time each day. Please encourage your child to use the school buses each day. This may mean they need to leave the house earlier, but it guarantees they are ready for the start of school. Up-to-date information on the school buses is on the school website https://www.mmc.school.nz/key-info/bus-information The afternoon buses leave the school grounds promptly at 3pm each day. The 712a buses are now arriving at 3 pm and the later one arrives at approximately 3.10pm. |

Clarifying Bee Card changes – No action needed right now
How you travel or how your Bee Card works today is not changing right now. The update to Bee Card terms and conditions is just to prepare for the future introduction of Motu Move, the new national public transport payment system. What does this mean for you? - You can keep using your Bee Card as usual – no action is required.
- Bay of Plenty won’t transition to Motu Move until later in 2025 – we’ll provide you with plenty of notice before any changes take effect.
- When the Bee Card scheme is eventually replaced, new payment options will include:
- Contactless debit or credit card - Digital payments on mobile phones and smart watches (including Apple Pay and Google Pay) - A prepaid Motu Move card
What do you need to do now? - Keep using your Bee Card as normal – nothing is changing yet.
- If you keep a higher balance on your Bee Card, may want to consider running it down to avoid any inconvenience when we do transition later in 2025.
For now, there’s nothing you need to do - just keep travelling with your Bee Card as usual. For more information on Motu Move go to motumove.govt.nz |
