From the Principal 15 June 2021 Kia ora whanau, Over Queen’s Birthday weekend I had the pleasure of heading to Wellington and watching our Sheila Winn Shakespeare students perform at the Michael Fowler Centre. It was an amazing performance at an amazing venue so credit needs to go to the staff and students who made that happen. Whilst in town, I popped in to watch a large number of our volleyballers representing the Bay of Plenty at the national provincial champs. It was wonderful to see so many of our students achieving at such a high level, knowing that what I witnessed was just a fraction of the work that had got our students either centre court or centre stage. On the topic of centre stage, I would like to acknowledge Skye Hine who made it to the final four of Popstars NZ. I know that many of you had been following her progress throughout the show and shared our disappointment when she came so close to winning. To achieve what she has is remarkable for any person, let alone one so young. If you haven’t had a chance to watch her final performance, it is on TVNZ on demand and her recently released single can be found on all streaming platforms. Year 9 camps start this week at Aongatete Lodge in the Kaimai Ranges. A lot of work and planning has gone into making these a positive and meaningful experience for our students. It will be the first time we have run Year 9 camps for a few years and it is a new venue. We will be evaluating and reflecting as we go to ensure future camps will benefit from our collective experience. More updates in the sporting realm will be through in coming weeks but I would like to congratulate Payton Takimoana and Melika Samia. Payton, after a stand out season for Mount Maunganui, has been selected into the Bay of Plenty Volcanix. An incredible achievement for a Year 13 student. Melika made the selection camp for the New Zealand Tall Ferns, the only secondary school student to do so. Noho ora mai, Alastair Sinton Principal

HE WAKA EKE NOA House Haka Competition The sun shone on the annual house haka competition where following three trainings, each house had an opportunity to demonstrate their pride and skill in front of our judges as well as students and staff from both Ōmanu and Mount Maunganui Primary Schools. It was not an easy task for our judging panel of Arohanoa Mathews and Tahlia Rikihana from Ngāi te Rangi iwi, old boy and music legend Joel Shadbolt, and Ōmanu staff member Awhi Taft. Students and staff gave it their all with the following results: - 4th – Ruru
- 3rd – Kōtuku
- 2nd – Huia
- 1st – Takahē
Takahē shook the earth with their performance of Te Haka Maunganui. |

Te Tauranga Mātauranga Staff Workshops Staff recently attended professional learning workshops to support pedagogy that is culturally responsive and relational. It is always a wonderful thing to be able to learn from each other as teachers. Te reo Māori, NCEA changes relating to mana ōrite, design thinking, contextualised learning, co-construction and differentiation strategies, challenge and extension, were some of the workshops offered and facilitated by Mount Maunganui College staff. Kapa Haka Tutored by Tapuraka Rikihana, the kapa haka is preparing for the school Matariki Celebration and the secondary schools regional competition at the end of term two. ____________________________________________ |
MOUNT MAUNGANUI KĀHUI AKO Te Rito - helping learners succeed
Our school is in the process of implementing Te Rito. Te Rito is a way for important information about New Zealand learners to be securely stored and shared. It involves the development of a national repository of learner data that enables the safe and secure transfer of information between schools and the sector. About Te Rito It will support learners, parents, whānau, educators and other decision-makers to make decisions in the best interests of learners, by enabling informed and targeted action at all levels of the education system. When learners shift between educational settings, the information that their new school needs to know will travel with them. That means a better experience for all. Important learner information won’t need to be re-gathered at every step of their journey. Only authorised users will be given access to Te Rito and will have access only to the data relevant to their role or position. In most schools, this will be the SENCO and Principal. ____________________________________________ Malo Uma Talofa lava, mālō e lelei, bula, namaste, kia orāna, fakalofa lahi atu, mālo ni, fakatalofa atu, mauri, kia ora koutou, We have had a busy term and a half for our Pasifika group, with community engagements and a couple of two-night nofo at school. We have been very fortunate to gain sponsorship from Pasifika in the Bay Trust who met the costs of 50 t-shirts printed with our new logo, designed by our Art Teacher, the talented Christine Barron. They were printed for us by Henry Fa’afili and 7.17 Apparel. We got to debut them when we went to Polyfest in Auckland on the last day of Term 1. |

We have had raffles running to fundraise for our group expenses and would like to thank our parent/aiga member Losaline Hudson and Countdown Bayfair for their generous sponsorship. Thank you also to all the school families, friends and staff who supported us by buying raffle tickets. We raised $400 and our prize-winners were Rhys-Rahera McLeod-Faka’Osilea, Nadine and Nicky Ripley. We also extend our thanks to PICTT for supporting us with a $200 Pak’n’Save voucher towards our grocery bill for our nofo. Members of our group performed at the Multicultural Festival in Tauranga, at a cultural day at Pillans Point School and at the Tauranga Boxing Academy Aiga programme Fiafia nght. During our Term 1 nofo we started an education programme on the effects of climate change in the Pacific and welcomed Prof Chris Battershill, Dr Anne-Maree Schwarz and Akuhata Bailey-Winiata to present to our group. Most recently we have continued this topic with a study of the effects of climate change in Tokelau. We also had guest speakers, Mefi Taele-Pavihi from Community Policing in Mount Maunganui, and Carolynn Tepou, fashion designer and student-teacher (her current exhibition Matua Fifine Tuai Matua Fifine Fuata / Old Woman New Woman is open in Whakatāne). Our group continues to grow in numbers and in strength and we are grateful to all who support us on our journey. Offering a practical hands-on learning experience, Street Smart is a one-day event providing young drivers and their parents/caregivers the opportunity to undertake supervised driving practice. There is a focus on developing good decision-making strategies for safe driving, including assessing themselves, reading the road environment, resisting peer pressure, managing or eliminating distractions and planning ahead. Street Smart takes place in safe, controlled, off-the-road environments, under the watchful eye of qualified coaches plus the parent/caregiver. This provides the parent with the opportunity to also assess themselves, in order to be a better coach and mentor to their teen.
