Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou,

Term 3 has certainly featured a few ups and downs. The cancellation of a number of important events such as Winter Tournament Week, Year 12 camp and our annual quiz night was obviously disappointing but we have still managed to squeeze in a great deal of school work and co-curricular achievements in the time we have had.

Our annual Lynfield exchange went ahead as did DanceNZMade Regionals, our Roadshow, Open Evening and the Bay of Islands Music trip. The majority of our local sporting competitions have reached a satisfactory conclusion and our annual Headshave fundraiser and Senior Assessment Week went ahead with only minor modifications.

As a school community, we have much to be grateful for and I think it is important we reflect on this challenging term with satisfaction.

This year, Headshave fundraising has gone toward Tia-Jayne Rodger as she battles a rare cancer that requires expensive treatment. I would like to express my gratitude to the staff and students who have, at the time of writing, raised over $11,000 for this cause. The Givealittle page can be found here if you would like to support the Rodger family.

Attached to this newsletter is a Sports update where you will see that we have had another outstanding season of sporting results. You can keep up to date with achievements by following Mount Maunganui College Sport on Instagram here. Good luck to all teams heading away this weekend for tournaments.

This week our MMC 2020 school album passed 50,000 streams on Spotify. Mr Beaufort and this year’s crop of musical talent are currently putting the finishing touches on MMC 2021. Look out next term for the album release and related promotional gigs.

Looking forward to next term, the shape of our prizegiving season will be determined by alert levels, I appreciate your understanding as we navigate through this time. NCEA examinations and the completion of the academic year are the main features of the end of the year so I am looking forward to seeing all students back on Monday 18 October refreshed and ready to go.

Covid has once again had an impact on winter sports which is a real shame, especially for our senior students, but it hasn’t stopped some great results for Mount Maunganui College across a variety of codes.

Off-field Sports Uniforms

A reminder that the off-field sport uniforms are available online for purchase by clicking on this link  https://www.onusportswear.com/. The goal is to have all students playing sport at Mount Maunganui College arriving and leaving in approved sports uniform. A great place to start is the hoodie with a long or short sleeve tee (speak to your coach to clarify which one they prefer you to have).

High achievers

Casey Ward
Casey Ward has been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2022 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships as a member of the Wakeboarding NZ team, riding in the Junior Men's Division. The competition is scheduled to be held in Italy in 2022.

Charlie Vail
Charlie has been selected in the New Zealand Junior Women’s Volleyball squad for the 2021/2022 season. Two teams will be selected from the squad. The New Zealand team will represent New Zealand at the Asian Championships while the Development Squad will attend the Australian Junior Championships in July 2022.

Waterpolo
Year 12 students, Matt Anderson and Greer Anderson, have been selected into the New Zealand Waterpolo 04 squad while Year 13, Ella Rutten, has been named in the 03 squad. All three students were set to attend training camps held in Auckland which were unfortunately affected due to covid.

Jai Knight
Year 12 student, Jai Knight has been selected to attend the Chiefs Under 18 Camp held at St Paul’s Collegiate over the coming holidays. Jai is the first Mount Maunganui College student to be invited to this particular camp and one of only four players selected from the Western Bay of Plenty region.  He will no doubt gain a wealth of knowledge from the high profile coaches looking to develop the best under 18 talent in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki regions.
