Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa,

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge all families who attended our school interviews during the second week of this term. Over 1000 parents and caregivers attended these meetings resulting in over 3600 bookings which equate to nearly 450 hours of interviews. Success for students at school relies on a partnership with their homes, so thank you once again.

Thanks also to our army of volunteers for supporting our winter sports programme. A number of codes are in full swing and this season is looming to be our largest yet. We are extremely grateful to our volunteers and I know you will receive the full support of families, players and our Sports Department. Check out the latest Sports Update from Director of Sports Dan Meade below.

It was a pleasure to attend our school ball two weekends ago. Our students were exceptionally well behaved and respectful and really enjoyed the evening. Hosting these types of events requires a huge amount of planning and work from staff and students so I would like to acknowledge student leaders Eden Nicklin-Foster and Grace Akroyd and the Ball Committee for their work on this event.

Our school cross-country took a slightly different shape from previous years with the Physical Education and Health Department taking a lead in developing our ‘Move Well’ event. While a competitive course was available for those keen to race, this whole school event was developed to support Gumboot Friday and I Am Hope to raise awareness about youth mental health and well-being. Commonwealth Athlete Kristie Baillie was on hand to speak to our students and her messages were inspirational.

I am sure you will all wish our talented Sheilah Winn Shakespeare students a safe and successful trip to the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington over Queen’s Birthday weekend. We have finalists in the 15-minute and 5-minute categories both of which are shaping up as very strong contenders. Well done to these teams and the staff supporting them, regardless of the results, there is huge success in the journey they have undertaken so far.

It has been an awesome week for staff and students experiencing Sam and Haritina from Milky Way Kiwi who have been set up in the hall with their mobile planetarium. Both of these facilitators have shared a huge amount of knowledge with our Year 10’s and the learning will inspire many students to pursue this fascinating field of study.

There are a few public service announcements below, please take the time to read these carefully.

Noho ora mai,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

COVID-19 INFORMATION

Covid-19 is still active in our community and health measures common in all framework settings should be followed. Basic hygiene measures such as washing and sanitising hands as well as cough and sneeze etiquette remain crucial to limiting the spread of Covid-19. As always, if your child is unwell please keep them at home and notify the school.

We are continuing to monitor positive cases in the school community so please click here if your child tests positive.

Isolation requirements are still in effect for positive cases and their households.

Off-field Sports Uniforms

A reminder that off-field sports uniforms are available online for purchase by clicking on this link  https://pureathletic.co.nz under the ‘Schools and Clubs’ tab. The goal is to have all students playing sports at Mount Maunganui College arriving and leaving in approved sports uniforms. A great place to start is the hoodie with a long or short sleeve tee (speak to your coach to clarify which one they prefer you to have).

Please note, all first team players will be provided with ‘off-field’ kit for the season.

What’s been happening?

Trident Tournament
Our Junior and Senior Boys Basketball teams recently travelled to Whakatane to take part in the Trident Invitational Tournament, hosted by Trident High School.

The Junior Boys had some valuable learning, improving in every game.

The Senior team had a great tournament, coming away with the title for the second year running.

‘Move Well’
The PE Department recently hosted the inaugural ‘Move Well’ event. This event combined the cross country with a fundraising walk, concert and guest speaker, Kristie Ballie. Kristie spoke about her mental health journey, as well as her experience as a professional athlete and the strategies she used to improve her well being. Funds were raised and donated to Gumboot Friday and it was great to see staff and students alike get behind such a great cause.

Manihera Golf Tournament
We sent two teams to the Manihera Golf Tournament held in Kawerau on 24 May. The teams performed extremely well, coming 2nd and 3rd overall. Best on the day was Taine Tautuku who shot a 79 and Georgia Kaye who shot an 82.

What’s coming up?

Rock climbing
Bay of Plenty Rock Climbing Championships are being held at Rocktopia, Mount Maunganui on Friday 27 May. We’re sending eight climbers to compete. Best of luck, team.

The New Zealand Women’s Rugby team are training at Mount Maunganui College at 3pm on Tuesday 31 May. They have invited three of our U18 female players to attend training and all students are welcome to watch the practice from the ‘path side’ of the field as long as they don’t interfere with training at all.

BOP Cross Country
The Bay of Plenty Cross Country Championships are being held at Waipuna on Monday 30 May. We wish our athletes competing the best of luck.

NISS Swimming Championships
The North Island Secondary School Swimming Championships are being held in Wellington on 11 and 12 June. Our swimmers have performed extremely well over the last couple of years and we wish them the best of luck.

Polar Plunge
We are holding our 11th annual Polar Plunge on the morning of Wednesday 22 June. The event is a fundraiser set up in the memory of students Harrison Mundy and Jed Roberts. Students and families are to arrive at the Omanu Surf Club at 7am for short speeches before a mid-winter dip in the ocean. Bring a gold coin to donate to the cause and earn house points.
