Midweek College Cricket Post

College Grade Cricket for Mount Maunganui College is run by the Mount Maunganui Cricket club and forms a great link between Junior Cricket and Club men’s grades. This year the club had two senior mens teams and Mount College had several students involved in these teams.

Cricket Report 3 March 2107

The MMC 1st XI played in the second round of the Gillette Cup on Thursday 2 March. The format for the day was 2 T20 matches played at Gordon Spratt Domain.

First up MMC played a strong Gisborne Boys High School. After winning the toss and inserting GBHS the Mount boys struggled to make inroads with both opening batsmen scoring half centuries. GBHS finished their 20 having scored 128/2.

A well structured chase was needed and provided with strong performances from Morgan Barclay-Frank and Stefan Heuberger but regular wickets in the final few overs arrested that momentum leaving MMC to be dismissed for 112 in the final over.

The Second game of the day was against local opposition in the form of Bethlehem College 1st XI. Having lost the toss the Mount fielded first once again and put on a significantly better showing in the field. Alex MacMillan opened the bowling with a brave spell of slow bowling that saw him bowl his 4 overs straight through for figures of 2/11. Our quicker bowlers tied up the far end and BC were never able to recover from their slow start. Mitch Fergus bowled a great 2 over spell at the death to finish with 2/2. BC restricted to 88/7.

Cole Aitchison and Jack Power provided an excellent platform with a 73 run opening stand, Jack Power 28 and Cole Aitchison 35. This left James Cornelius and Morgan Barclay-Frank to finish the Job with 2 overs to spare.

Cricket Report 28 February 2017

Mount Maunganui College fielded a young side in the National 1st XI competition field day at Fergusson Park on Thursday. The day consisted of 3 T16 format games.

The first game vs Otumoetai College resulted in MMC chasing down 106 for the loss of 2 wickets with the outstanding contribution Cole Aitchison’s 73 not out at the top of the order. Connor Lucas picked up 3 cheap wickets during our fielding innings.

Game 2 was against a strong John Paul College side from Rotorua. An outstanding effort in the field including 3/12 from Finn Wykes and 4 catches and a runout from Stefan Heuberger restricted them to 92. MMC put together a beautifully paced chase with James Cornelius anchoring the innings and Morgan Barclay-Frank showing great composure at the end to score 5 runs from his first 2 balls to get them home on the penultimate ball.

The long hot day and 2 close finishes had caught up to the Mount lads by the third game vs Aquinas College. A fatigued display in the field conceded 120 runs despite Finn and Connor picking up 3 wickets a piece and James Cornelius taking 3 catches and a runout. The Aquinas bowlers bowled beautifully making the most of the bounce offered by the artificial wicket to dismiss MMC for 52.

The 2 good wins see us qualify for a place in the next round vs the Poverty Bay Qualifier Gisborne Boys High School this Thursday.  Register under Junior Cricket
