REPRESENTATIVES
Ella Pollock has been selected in the NZ Youth Woman's Team which will compete in Belgrade, Serbia this month. She will be competing at the FINA Youth Women's World Championships.
Bae Fountain and Reuben Ronalds of Mount Maunganui College have been selected to represent New Zealand at the FINA World Men's Youth Water Polo Championships in Szombathly, Hungary this August.
The team left Auckland on the 23rd of July and headed to Montenegro for pre competition training where they will train with and play against other national teams and local clubs before heading to Szombathely. This will be an incredible experience for them both as Water Polo is Hungary’s national sport. They are up against some pretty heavy competition and will face Uzebekistan, Italy, USA and Croatia in their pool play.
Fountain a member also of the New Zealand Men’s Water Polo team will be competing for his second time at the Fina World Men’s Youth Water Polo Championship in his role as goalkeeper. He brings with him not only experience but also an appreciation and respect for the world class teams and players he and the team of 15 will face. This will be Ronald’s first time abroad competing in the Youth Men’s team, however he has also represented New Zealand within the born 2000 age group team.
The competition runs from 11th - 18th of August.

2018 MMC Boys’ Water Polo
Hi everyone
Thanks for making yourself available for MMC Boys’ Water Polo in 2018. The keenness and commitment to date is good. The teams will reconvene mid – late January for training. All players are encouraged to join Tauranga Club trainings which will be most nights of the week. Pan Pacs is in the July holidays and TGA teams will be well prepared (U20, U18, U16 and U14 teams).
MMC Boys will train Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Baywave from 7.30-8.30am. Please be there at 7.20am ready to jump in the pool as soon as the swim squads get out. This will be the session when team drills are done so it is imperative everyone is there (for the whole hour).
Please remember that as the year 13’s leaves MMC each year, the makeup of teams and spots in the Premier team continue to open up.
Goal – The Premier Boys team for the North Islands and Nationals goal is to make the semifinals at both North Islands and NZSS Champs.
There are 3 overarching components to training for a sport like water polo –
- Fitness / speed / strength. This must be achieved through individuals swimming hard and regularly in swim squads, running, training in the gym, surf club and so on.
- Individual ball / water polo skills. These improve through all water polo activity. We won’t have as much time together as a team, as we would like. So, joining Tauranga Club trainings is a good idea. We will do what we can in MMC sessions.
- Team work / game awareness / supporting each other in the pool. This is achieved in MMC sessions and via game time.

2018 MMC Girls Water Polo
Hi everyone
Thanks for making yourself available for MMC Girls Water Polo in 2018. The keenness and commitment to date is good. PLEASE let us know asap if your name is not in these lists and you wish to play water polo in term one. Our apology if we have omitted you.
This notice provides some detail around key dates, trainings, teams and ‘our thinking’.
Thinking about teams and players can change. Sometimes due to things outside our control For example, someone new comes to MMC; or players drop out or get injured or alternatively, someone decides to train really hard and get great at the game!
The teams will reconvene mid – late January for training. All players are encouraged to join Tauranga Club trainings which will be most nights of the week. Pan Pacs is in the July holidays and TGA teams will be well prepared (U20, U18, U16 and U14 teams).
MMC Girls will train Wednesday mornings at Baywave from 7.30-8.30am. Please be there at 7.20am ready to jump in the pool as soon as the swim squads get out. This will be the session when team drills are done so it is imperative everyone is there (for the whole hour).
We are looking for another opportunity for the Girls Premier and B teams to train, to better help them prepare for North Islands and Nationals.
Please remember that as the year 13’s leaves MMC each year, the makeup of teams and spots in the Premier team continue to open up.
Remember … things can change.
Goal – The Premier Girls team for the North Islands and Nationals goal is to make the semifinals at both North Islands and NZSS Champs.
There are 3 overarching components to training for a sport like water polo –
- Fitness / speed / strength. This must be achieved through individuals swimming hard and regularly in swim squads, running, training in the gym, surf club and so on.

Below are the 2016 Water Polo results... Watch this space for more information regarding 2017.
2016 Season Overview
Water Polo is one of our strongest sports at Mount Maunganui college with six of our students being selected in New Zealand representative teams. Our Senior A Boys team finished 8th in the premier Division at the NZSS Championships. The team has been invited to play in a transtasman tournament in December which includes the top New Zealand and Australian school teams. Our Senior A Girls team finished 5th in the Premier Division in the NZSS Championships and top ranked school outside of Auckland. These outstanding results were achieved with very young sides and both teams are losing only a few year 13 students for the 2017 season.
Many of our top Waterpolo students play over winter for the Tauranga Waterpolo Club were at the National Championships the U16 Boys team won Gold and the U16 Girls team won Silver with Shinae Carrington being named in the Tournament team alongside Bae Fountain who was named Boys most Valuable Player.
Water Polo National Championships: Senior A Boy's and Girl's
During the term two holidays Mount Maunganui College Senior A boy's and girl's water polo teams competed at the water polo nationals championships held in Wellington. The girl's played exceptionally well and just missed the opportunity to play in the top four, losing the quarterfinal to St Cuthbert's College by two goals. In their final game, the girls beat Kristin College by three goals, placing them fifth in New Zealand. The team has improved immensely since competing in the North Island championships where they placed12th overall. Mount Maunganui College boy's team placed eighth overall, which was a great performance for such a young team.
